Madliena parish – stakeholder motivation to act, Latvia

Madliena parish is a part of Ogre municipality with an area of 168 kmlocated in the middle of Latvia. 2/5 of the area is occupied by agricultural land. Part of the parish is occupied by the scenic Ogre River Valley Nature Park, the river itself is well known for boating lovers.

Madliena parish stands out among the other pilot areas with intensive “soft” activities by involving local stakeholders in grassland management related discussions and obtaining “bottom-up” messages to be summarized and submitted to the local authority.

Project activities

  • Several meetings, round table discussions and field trips have taken place. Identification, mapping and assessment of grassland ecosystem services performed as well as work on development scenario building continued, while proposals of the local community and business actors on economically viable solutions for grassland management were developed.

  • Book-like notice board was built.

  • 3 visitor days have been organized (read more about the 1st one, the 2nd one and the 3rd one). They received more than 50 visitors.
